If you like the way that natural light looks in your house, as opposed to artificial lights, you might agree with my notion that skylights are the best way to light up your living space. In our house, we have them in every room, with the exception of our large walk-in closet. The nice thing is that every day we wake up with the rising sun. We basically do not need our ceiling lights until the evening, but even then we prefer candles and warm stand-up lamps. The only potential drawback I could see with relying on skylights is that sometimes the mid-day sun can really heat up our house. For us, it is no big deal, but many turn on their air conditioner as soon as the temperature hits 70 degrees. In our case this is unnecessary. Our thermostat is usually set to 76 degrees, whether it is summer or winter. Sometimes we just turn the HVAC system off all together and open up all the windows and doors. We feel like nature is the climate control system that god made for we, so why not take advantage of that divine heating and cooling system? Of course sometimes it gets a bit extreme so then we let our HVAC system kick in. Even our dogs are not the biggest fans of excessive artificial indoor air quality manipulation. We can tell by their facial expressions. Usually when we turn on our gas furnace, they start to pant a bit. I think it might be the hum of the machinery that makes them nervous.
