If you prefer the way that natural light looks in your house over artificial lights, you might agree with the idea that skylights are the best way to light up your living space. In our house, both of us have them in every room, with the exception of our sizable walk-in closet. The nice thing is that every morning both of us wake up with the rising sun. We basically do not need our ceiling lights until the night, but even after that I really love candles and certain stand-up lamps. The only potential disadvantage I could maybe see with relying on skylights is that occasionally the mid-day sunlight can legitimately heat up our house. For us, it is no big deal, but numerous people turn on their air conditioner as soon as the temperature hits 68 degrees. In our case this is somewhat unnecessary. Our thermostat is usually set to 69 degrees, whether it is summer season or Winter season. Sometimes both of us just turn the HVAC system off all together and open up all the windows and some doors. We sometimes feel like nature is the climate control system that the creator made for us, so why not take advantage of that divine heating and cooling system? Of course occasionally it gets a bit extreme so after that I let our HVAC eventually kick in. Even our pets are not the biggest fans of excessive artificial air quality manipulation. We can tell by their facial expressions, usually when we turn on our gas furnace, they start to pant a bit. It might be the hum of the machinery that makes them nervous though.
