When I was twelve, I came back home from summer camp and found that my mother had cleaned out my room. She had thrown away several hundred of my comic books, because she said I didn’t read them any more and they were just taking up space. It was, without question, the angriest I have ever been in my entire life. Up until that point, and beyond. I’m still mad about it! Those comic books are long gone, of course, but since then I have always been very protective of my belongings. Now I am a husband and father with his own home, but I keep my comic books in an air conditioned storage unit I rent a few blocks away. It is important I protect them not only from being thrown away by my wife or ruined by my kids, but also protected with high air quality, and climate control that will retard the growth of mold and mildew. These air conditioned storage units are really amazing, because you get full climate control, plus a locking door and on-premises security guards 24/7. The security is a nice feature, but honestly with something like comic books having the air conditioning and air purification system in place is an even bigger factor for protection. The aging paper and colorful inks can bleed and run if the heating and humidity gets too intense, so maintaining consistence climate control for your collection is of the highest importance. If you have comics, don’t just stick them anywhere, make sure it’s a safe location with a good HVAC system.
